Petersen recalls the good fortune of being able to paint with a group of people who weekly went and painted with George Carlson at his studio in Elizebeth, CO. Other artists who have influenced him at that time that were coming on strong were Buffalo Kiplinski, Ramon Kelly, Jagman, Brogan, Ned Jacob, Doug Dawson and Chemiel.
In 1988 he moved to the small, historic city of Trinidad, CO, on the north route of the Santa Fe Trail. He became involved with the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art in Trinidad. His eye for architecture, and love of old buildings led him to aquire and renovate the space that now houses the Original Townsite Fine Art Gallery.
