Lois Petersen grew up in the coal mining town of Trinidad, Colorado. She began private classes at the age of nine where she acquired her love for plein air painting. She furthered her art education at CSU and started her career as an art teacher in the Jefferson County Schools. She and her students work are featured in the book "Studio Art". Lois was included in the book Plein Air New Mexico, published in 2006. She was also featured in the July/August issue of The Pastel Journal in 2001.
After living in California, Germany, New Hampshire and Denver, she returned to her hometown, Trinidad, where she taught elementary education which eventually led to being a full time art teacher in the elementary school until her retirement in 2006. For 12 years she also taught adult painting classes at Trinidad State Junior College.

Being back in her hometown opened her eyes to the country in which she grew up. She now explores the valleys and canyons painting the great variety of landscapes that Southern Colorado offers. Working is pastel and oil, Lois captures the light, shadow, colors and textures of the land throughout the seasons. Lois has three sons, and she is married to the architect and watercolorist, Alan Petersen.
